HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERIES.

Solar panels and battery storage systems are designed to give you many years of clean energy and savings with very little effort. One of the biggest advantages of home solar is that it’s largely low-maintenance, but like any energy system, a little care can help keep everything running smoothly for years to come.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to maintain your solar panels and batteries, what checks to do (and when), and when to call in the experts.

WHY MAINTAIN YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM?

Looking after your solar panels and battery means:

• Better long-term performance
• Higher savings on your energy bills
• Fewer avoidable faults or problems
• Longer system lifespan
• Peace of mind

At LIME, we install premium, low-maintenance systems, but we still recommend the occasional check-up to keep things running at their best.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels are designed to handle the elements. The rain, wind and changing seasons won’t cause problems – and Scotland’s climate isn’t an issue.

In fact, one of the best things about solar panels is how little maintenance they need:

• They have no moving parts.
• Panels are self-cleaning in most cases – rain naturally helps keep them clear.
• Top-quality panels come with 20-25 years performance guarantees.

That said, here’s what we recommend:

1. Keep panels clean

In most cases, the rain is enough to keep your panels clean. But if you live near:

• The coast (salt spray)
• Trees (sap or heavy pollen)
• Construction or industrial areas (dust)

You might want to arrange professional cleaning every few years. This helps prevent build-up of dirt that can reduce panel efficiency.

Tip: Never climb on the roof or attempt cleaning yourself. Use an accredited professional.

2. Keep panels clear

Check every so often for:

• Overhanging branches that could shade panels
• Bird nests or droppings
• Debris (leaves, moss etc.)

If you notice anything, call us and we can arrange safe removal. Keeping panels clear maximises their output year-round.

3. Check your generation

Most systems come with a monitoring app (ours do). Keep an eye on your system’s performance. If generation drops suddenly, it may be a sign something needs checking.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR BATTERY STORAGE

Battery storage systems are built to last, but do benefit from regular checks, especially since they involve electronic systems and internal chemical processes.

Here’s how to look after your battery:

1. Use the monitoring app

Your battery’s app will show:

• Current charge levels
• Charging/discharging status
• Alerts for any faults or unusual behaviour
Checking this monthly helps catch any small issues early.

2. Watch out for temperature extremes

Batteries work best in mild temperatures. In Scotland, this isn’t usually a problem, but avoid installing them:

• In uninsulated attics
• In outdoor sheds (unless designed for it)
• In garages with extremes of cold or heat

We always recommend suitable locations when installing your battery.

3. Schedule a service check

We suggest having your battery professionally checked every 3-5 years:

• To confirm capacity is holding up well
• To update firmware
• To check connections and settings
• To catch small issues before they become big ones

WHEN TO CALL AN EXPERT

Contact your installer if you notice:

• A sudden drop in generation
• An error message or fault warning in the app
• Visible damage to panels or equipment
• Your battery isn’t charging or discharging as expected
• Strange noises, smells or overheating from equipment (rare)

It’s always better to get a quick check than to leave a potential issue unnoticed.

HOW LONG DO PANELS AND BATTERIES LAST?

Solar panels: 25-30 years of strong performance, with minimal maintenance
Inverters: typically 10-15 years – replacement is simple and low-cost
Batteries: 10-15 years, depending on usage – modern batteries degrade very slowly

By looking after your system with a few simple checks, you can maximise both savings and lifespan.
